A faithful reproduction of an 1825 trade sign originally painted by Edward Hicks, the renowned Bucks County artist celebrated for his Peaceable Kingdom series. This piece is crafted on aged black‑painted antique boards with half‑round trim, featuring gold lettering and accents.

In 1825, Hicks was commissioned by the Newtown Library Company to create a sign inspired by the famous “Thumb Portrait” of Benjamin Franklin, which he incorporated into the design. Historical records note that Hicks charged $1.00 for the original work — a modest sum for what became a treasured example of early American folk art.
